Ready to potty train, unsure about taking the leap?

Ready to potty train, unsure about taking the leap?

Read this checklist to see if you’re ready:

1. Clear by pediatrician if child has special or medical needs.

2. Set aside 3 highly preferred reinforcing items that will only be available when child is sitting on the potty. Keep them in a safe place in the bathroom.

3. Save the most preferred item for successful use of the toilet. For example, a favorite candy, song, video clip that’s ONLY given once they make successfully on the toilet.

4. These highly reinforcing items are NEVER available outside of toilet training.

5. Bathroom is comfortable. Bathroom should be clear and clean of odor and items. Use a toilet seat cover with arms, and a step stool or upside down bin to rest the feet.

6. Parent has a system to keep themself motivated.

7. Chosen method of communication. Verbal: bathroom, I need to make, or toilet/potty. Communication device, or communication button for non-verbal individuals.
